Howard G. Kalkofen Sr., 94
Howard G. Kalkofen Sr., of Summit Lake, died Thursday, October 18, 2018, at Tomahawk Health Services. He was 94 years old. He was born on October 12, 1924, in Summit Lake, the son of the late Phil and Elda (Bremer) Kalkofen. He married ClaraBelle Diemel on June 26, 1948, she survives.
He was a graduate of Antigo High School, class of 1942.
Mr. Kalkofen was a World War II United States Army veteran having served in Africa and Italy. He served with the 439th Regiment of the 88th Infantry Division, the famous “Blue Devils’ and in 2002 received a Bronze Star.
Howard worked in the woods for Vulcan Lathe for a few years. He was a lineman for NorthWestern Railroad for 32 years retiring in 1983.
He was a member of the Sparks-Doernenburg American Legion Post 3, Antigo, the Leland Tollefson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2653, Antigo and the National Rifle Association.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and keeping up with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years, ClaraBelle; three sons, Howard “Gene” (Vickie) Kalkofen Jr. of Rhinelander, Errol Kalkofen of Summit Lake and Dee Kalkofen of Summit Lake; a daughter, Linda Piller of Summit Lake; a sister, Phyllis (Bill) Hess of New Jersey; six grandchildren, Jennifer (Paul) Raatz, Phillip Kalkofen, Amanda (Kyle) Larson, Nia (Jason) Ebert, Hunter (Taylor) Kalkofen and Hallie Kalkofen; eight and a half great-grandchildren, Zachary, Samantha, Abby, Madison, Kallie, Knyt, Axel, Hank and one on the way.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 22, 2018, at 1:30 p.m. at the Bradley Funeral Home. Burial will take place in Lakeside Cemetery, Summit Lake. Visitation will be 12 to 1:30 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Antigo veterans will provide military honors following the service at the funeral home.
