The Woodside Dome in Wisconsin Dells became a showcase for the Antigo Wrestling Club over the past week as the program’s elite athletes converged for the WWF Freestyle and Greco-Roman State Championships. It was a weekend defined by high-amplitude throws, technical precision, and a clear message to the rest of the state: the Red Robins are ready for the national stage.
Leading the charge was Olivia Hofrichter, who cemented her status as one of the state's premier wrestlers by securing her third career WWF Freestyle State Championship. Hofrichter’s performance wasn't just dominant; it was a masterclass in efficiency. Competing in a five-girl round robin, she refused to let a single opponent survive into the second period.
Hofrichter dismantled a field of elite challengers with a variety of technical strikes—utilizing chin whips, laterals, and whip-overs to transition seamlessly into her signature scarf-hold pins. By the time the dust settled, she had recorded four consecutive falls, earned the top spot on the podium, and punched her fourth career ticket to the USA Wrestling Junior National Tournament in Fargo, North Dakota.
While Hofrichter handled business in Freestyle, Samson Smith spearheaded the club’s success in the Greco-Roman division. Smith’s path to the podium was an exhibition of explosive power. He opened his tournament with a stunning 18-second pin and navigated a gauntlet of tough matches to reach the third-place bout.
In that match, Smith overcame an early six-point deficit, using a series of double overhook throws to tie the match before securing a dramatic pinfall at the 2:42 mark. A subsequent injury default in the second-place match officially earned Smith the silver medal and, more importantly, a spot alongside Hofrichter at the Junior National Tournament in July.
The success didn't stop with the finalists. The Antigo Wrestling Club saw deep runs and podium finishes across both international styles:
The numbers from the weekend speak for themselves: a state champion, a state runner-up, multiple podium finishers, and two national qualifiers. However, the stats only tell half the story. The real story lies in the program's technical growth. Seeing Antigo wrestlers confidently executing high-risk, high-reward moves like suplexes and laterals at the state level shows a program that is coaching at an elite level.
As Hofrichter and Smith begin their preparations for the grueling national tournament in Fargo, the rest of the club can look back on the Wisconsin Dells trip as a definitive success. With seven wrestlers competing at the highest state level and the "Road to Fargo" now officially open, the future of Red Robin wrestling is not just bright—it is national.
