Marathon County Historical Society to Host Old-Fashioned Downtown Walking Tour

Posted

The Marathon County Historical Society (MCHS) will host the Old-Fashioned Downtown Tour on Saturday, June 20, 2026. Beginning at the Woodson History Center, located at 410 McIndoe Street in Wausau, this spirited walking tour invites guests to explore downtown Wausau through the lens of architecture, local history, and Wisconsin’s favorite cocktail: the Old-Fashioned.

During the two-hour guided tour, participants will visit several historic downtown sites while enjoying sample-sized Old-Fashioned cocktails at select stops. Spirit-free options will also be available. Along the way, guests will hear stories that bring Wausau’s historic buildings and their colorful pasts to life. Featured stops include The Juliette, formerly the Plier Grocery Store, where guests will learn about Carl Plier’s legacy and the evolution of the historic storefront. The tour will also visit Peking, located in the former Hotel Wausau building, where participants will discover the story of hotelier Walter Schroeder and the architectural transformation of the downtown landmark.

Additional stops will include the Yawkey House, Wausau City Hall, and Wausau’s oldest commercial building. Throughout the tour, guests will gain insight into the architectural styles, materials, time periods, and designers that helped shape the character of downtown Wausau.
Two tour times are available to accommodate guests, with sessions running from 4–6 p.m. and 6–8 p.m. The event will take place rain or shine. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.

Guests must be 21 or older to attend. Tickets are $35 per person. Space is limited, and reservations are encouraged. Tickets may be purchased online through Ticket Source at https://www.ticketsource.com/mchstickets
