In the heart of winter, when the ice is thick and the air is crisp, the annual Jerry Schuh Jump-In in Pickerel stands as a testament to tradition, resilience, and community spirit. On Feb. 8th 2025, thousands gathered at Pickerel Lake for one of the area’s most anticipated events, braving the cold to celebrate a unique legacy.
The event traces its roots back to 1988 when Jerry Schuh, owner of Jerry Schuh’s Sportsman Bar, first dared to take a mid-winter plunge into the frigid waters of Pickerel Lake. What began as a daring polar plunge has since evolved into something even more exhilarating—an open-water snowmobile run that has become a centerpiece of the event. Despite Jerry’s passing, his four daughters have carried on the tradition, ensuring that the Jump-In remains a highlight of the winter season.
A Spectacle on the Ice
This year’s event drew dozens of daring snowmobile riders, skimming across the water in a test of skill and nerve. Spectators lined the shores, cheering on each attempt as riders hydroplaned across the lake, knowing full well that an icy plunge was just one miscalculation away. A dedicated volunteer crew stood ready, prepared to pull out any machine that fell victim to the unpredictable waters.
Beyond the excitement on the lake, the Jump-In serves as a major gathering for the community, bringing together locals and visitors alike. The economic and social impact is undeniable, as businesses in the area see a surge of activity from the influx of attendees. More than just a thrilling event, it has become a winter tradition that unites generations, keeping the spirit of Jerry Schuh alive in the very waters where he first took the plunge.
With another successful year in the books, the Jerry Schuh Jump-In remains a defining moment for the Pickerel area—a celebration of adventure, camaraderie, and the enduring power of tradition for the whole community.
